Building Trust in Peer-to-Peer Rentals

The fundamental challenge of any peer-to-peer marketplace is trust. You're asking a vehicle owner to hand their keys to a stranger, and asking a traveler to depend on a car they've never seen. Every feature we build at Roam is designed to make that exchange feel safe.

Identity verification

Before anyone can book or host on Roam, they complete identity verification through Stripe Identity. This includes:

• A scan of a government-issued photo ID (driver's license or passport)
• A live selfie that's matched against the ID photo
• Upload of proof of current auto insurance

This isn't a checkbox. It's a real-time biometric check that confirms you are who you say you are. Both hosts and renters go through the same process.

Reviews and ratings

After every trip, both the host and the renter leave reviews. These are public and permanent. Over time, they build a reputation that makes booking decisions easier for everyone.

We don't allow review manipulation. You can't delete a negative review. And we flag accounts with patterns of poor behavior.

Trip insurance

Every booking on Roam includes trip-based insurance. Hosts don't have to worry about their personal policy. Renters don't have to worry about surprise charges. If something goes wrong, the platform handles the claim process.

This removes the biggest source of friction in informal car-sharing arrangements.

Secure payments

Renters pay through the platform. Hosts receive payouts after trip completion. No cash changes hands. No awkward negotiations. Payment disputes are handled by our support team.

Host banking details are encrypted with AES-256 at rest and only decrypted by our authorized payouts team when processing transfers.

Communication through the platform

All messaging between hosts and renters happens in the Roam inbox. This creates a record that's useful if disputes arise, and it keeps personal phone numbers and emails private until both parties choose to share them.
